Mac OSX 10.5.6 Software Update

I proudly own a three-and-a-half year old iBook G4 that has been running OSX 10.5 Leopard for about nine months without a single problem. I’ve installed every software update to date with no problems at all. Then there was 10.5.6. I installed it about a week ago and immediately I noticed that there were frequent glitches and lags. This was extremely unusual and I absolutely had no idea what the problem was. I figured I’d restart and maybe things would clear up. But they didn’t. They only got worse.

The problems were getting more and more noticeable and they were starting to seriously disrupt my work. Today, I decided I would try one more restart and see how that goes. Big mistake. Ironically, I had my first ever “blue screen of death” on a Mac. I was shocked. Very calmly, I researched the problem and I was sure I’d find a fix. I did but it didn’t work for me. I also found out that I wasn’t the only one. Many are experiencing this problem due to installing Apple’s latest software upgrade. Now, I was worried.

I then thought maybe I should just reinstall Leopard and have a fresh new start. That didn’t work either. The laptop wasn’t reading the DVD. It wasn’t ejecting it either. I now realize that my trusty iBook has finally taken a shit.

I didn’t have much on the laptop, thankfully. I keep everything on external hard drives. Reinstalling the softwares I had is gonna be a bitch though. I can’t possibly remember them all. I do have many disk images saved on my externals as well, so guess that’s OK.

I’ve had great times with my iBook and I’m amazed it stayed with me that long. I refuse to use a temporary Windows laptop even temporarily, so I will be very lonely until I save enough money to get a new MacBook.

I don’t recommend updating your software. My brother is experiancing the beginnings of the slow death but I gave him a heads-up and he is backing up everything just incase. So if you decide to take a chance. Back-up your stuff first.

Starting today, I will look for inspiration instead of waiting for it to find me.

I will also tell people I love them.
