I Got Contact Lenses

I’ve been wearing my weird looking frames for exactly five years now and they look pretty much beaten up. But I love them! I went to the Walmart Vision Center, because Lenscrafters have the WORST customer service at the vision section of their store, to see if my vision has changed at all. Wal-Mart was GREAT and not very expensive. Lenscrafters wanted $70 just to get my eyeglass prescription. Walmart told me that for $78 I get my eyes checked for conditions, defects, whatever, a prescription for eyeglasses, a prescription for contact lenses, and a trial pair of Acuvue Advance or Oasys (depending on what’s best for me), a bottle of solution and a bottle of eye drops for contacts.

So I got the Acuvue Oasys and so far they are great! They’ll last me a month and that’s perfect. It’ll be enough to get new lenses put on my old frames or just get new ones. I love wearing eyeglasses and I will continue to do so most of the time, but I think i’ll be wearing contacts once in a while also; whenever I feel like wearing sunglasses.

I’ve always wanted sunglasses but thought it would be a hassle to get prescription sunglasses and some models don’t even offer prescription lenses on them. So that’s why I’m excited for this last month of summer!

I got these shades! I tried them out at the mall and they were cool. The original Wayfarer was gigantic and touched my cheeks. I got the 52mm New Wayfarer nearly 50% off retail price from Goodden’s. All of their products are sold at really great discounts. And if the model you want doesn’t have the color that you want on the website, you can contact them and ask them to order them for you. I haven’t tried that but I’m sure it’ll also be at the same discounted price listed on the website.

P.S. I wonder if someone would put these on her “I Want..” list. It would mean that I must be doing something right. ;)

    Hey, thanks for the advice! I haven’t gotten a new contact lens prescription in 10 years or so, and I am way over-due!

    Question: What is “Advance” and “Oasys”? Mine just say AcuVue on the box…. standard clear extended wear disposables. What is the difference, do you know?

    By the way, I can (and do) wear my AcuViews for 3 to 6 months before changing them. I guess it depends on how sensitive people eyes are, but a 3 month order of them lasts me well over a year. I don’t think I’ve even owned a pair of glasses since the early 1990s. I probably should order a pair of them too, while I’m down there. Just for emergencies, at least :)

    You should come here, where getting your eyes prescribed and checked at a place like Walmart would be for free. Getting them checked at an ophthalmologist would cost around 15 bucks tops.

    Craig, 10 YEARS?!?! the doc at wal-mart told me that i should check the contact lenses prescription every year, the eyeglasses every 2 years incase theres a change.. i honestly don’t know about the difference.. theres like 8 different acuvues listed on the website.. i guess they all cater to how much your eyes get dry.. and i think a pair is supposed to last a month only.. but i guess it depends on how u feel about them? i dont really know hehe..
    and yes getting backup glasses is always a good idea :]

    Roba, no wal-mart was great for $78 and i never actually considered an opto.. but im still glad i went with wal-mart.. :D

    for some odd reason I’ve been frightened of lenses….thanks for giving me a new perspective.

    I don’t trust wal-mart, I mean they aren’t exactly known for their ‘quality’. Go to a real eye-doctor and get a proper examination! I need to get new glasses too but I’ve been too lazy to get a new pair and back home you can just go to the jam3iya and they give you a free eye examination :D

    i use contacts once in a while as well another brand though called Bausch & Lomb which i preferred over the J&J

    but i wear my glasses most of the time

    I know, I order my contacts from 1-800-CONTACTS and every time I do, I have to give them the run around because they ask me for an updated prescription :(

    It’s good to know that its so easy and cheap to do at Wal-Mart. I’ve seen the optometrist in there but never stopped by to check them out. Thanks again for the tip! I’ll ask them about the differences in the contacts while I’m there.

    I tried contact lenses for the first time last month for my cousin’s wedding. At first I didn’t like them because they made everything looks bigger than usual, but a few days later I started to like them. I used them for a couple of weeks but now I’m back to my good ol’ pair of glasses. I have ordered a new pair that should arrive today or tomorrow.

  10. some guy Says:

    moo the jam3iya itself, they always have a sunglasses store connected to it which you can check your eyes!

  11. snookie Says:

    Ahmed, yeah im still getting used to that.. i cant believe that EVERYTHING in my peripheral vison is in focus..

    some guy, lol inshalla next time im in kuwait AND need to have my eyes checked i’ll consider the store connected to the jam3iya :P even though im 100% sure i wud do it at the Intl. Optics who’ve had me on file since i was in the 6th grade :D

  12. snookie Says:

    how come no one has commented on the sunglasses?! i thought they were pretty cool! :|

  13. some guy Says:

  15. snookie Says:

    AcuVue Oasis are incredible! I work with a PC monitor all day, eyes are always tired and dry. I’ve worn glass all my life, progressive for last 10 years. First impression with contacts WOW, everything is in focus and no frame blocking my vision, it was like my eyes went to HI-DEF for the first time. I can even read labels clearly on shelves, read documents by squinting (I am 60) like when I hit 45 with glasses!! Only problem so far was the trial ones from the Dr were NOT the same as the box I ordered from him. Could not see close up as with the trial ones??? Must have been a poor quality batch!! I see the world in a totally different light now. If not for the PC which has always been bad for eyes I would not have any complaints with vision.

    Response to extended ware contacts;
    I too ware my contacts longer than I should. I used to ware Acuevue contacts and swore by them until my Dr. turned me onto a new silicon based contact called “Day & Nite”. These lenses are not for everyone though. They are low h2o content and may irritate your eyes if your eyes don’t tear enough. I use contact wetting solution constantly, but I love them. The main reason I think that they put a limit on them of 1 month use is because of the eventual buildup of calcium deposits that would clog their breathing.

    OK, Differences as I know them;
    Acuevue regular & Acuevue2 are made of a celluloid material much like your eye. The problem with extended ware with these lenses is that your eye has to breath fresh oxygen to renew itself. These lenses will not pass enough oxygen to the surface of the eye to keep from damaging the eye for prolonged periods of time. My experience with them when waring them for a month or so, is after for a while, my cornea would swell and ad change shape causing my prescription to be off. Waring them too long, well let’s just say that I damaged my eye so that I had to quit waring them until my eyes healed.

    30 day extended ware Day & Nite lenses are wonderful. These lenses are silicone based and they actually pass up to 150% more oxygen to the eye than if you weren’t waring any lenses at all. I have no changing of my focus after waring them a while and my eyes remain healthy. I still ware them longer than I should though.

    Lenses at the least should be removed occasionally for cleaning because of the minute things in the air that can get between the lens and the eye and to unclog them. This could also cause damage.

    I am now, after 2 years on one box of 6 lenses, out of lenses and had to remove the right lens. I am now seeing clearly with only one eye and desperately looking for a supplier that will ship without a new prescription. If Wall-Mart only charges $78 for total exam and gives a courtesy pair of 30 day lenses, then I will be at Wall-Mart tomorrow. I don’t care how bad of an exam they give, as long as they don’t change my prescription. With the Day & Nites i know my prescription hasn’t changed.
