Cartoon Hypocracy

Cartoon hypocracy.. couldn’t have said it better myself.

People are so quick to be defensive and don’t actually take the time to think about things. Sure the cartoons were published waaay back in September but umm.. did any Danish Muslims reading the newspaper that published them react like many in the Middle East are? No.

It’s always been in the back of my mind because I just didn’t want to believe it, but to me, it looks like we are constantly looking for a reason to protest, burn flags, and throw stones. Anything to get media attention. Even if it is negative. Our religion is all about peace and we are always defending ourselves from being stereotyped as violent “rag heads” (yes, that is just one of the names). And then there we go screwing ourselves all over again. And for what? Stupid cartoons that were mostly read in Denmark and that no one took notice of for five months. But thanks to the fabulous publicity the Middle East has caused, everyone all over the world knows of it now.

Sure it’s blasphamy but we are making it look like this is the first time Islam has been ridiculed. Gimme a break. And what’s with all this violence? The Danish Embassy in Lebanon was burned down! Three were killed in a protest in Afghanistan! A 16-year-old shot a Catholic priest in Turkey! Need I continue?

And now an Iranian daily is actually holding a contest in creating cartoons about the Holocaust. Very childish and embarrassing.

I’m not saying that publishing the cartoons were justified (in my personal opinion I think they shouldn’t have been, there is such a thing as sensitivity in the media; they wouldn’t print a photograph of a brutally murdered child’s body, that would be insensitive towards the child’s family), but all this reaction is really getting out of hand and really unecessary.

I understood the reactions at first but when the boycotting, protesting and involvement of political figures started I went “Huh?” And now even after they apologized, there still is anger and violence. But now they’re demanding to admit that it was wrong to publish them in the first place. What next? Will they now demand that the cartoonist never to be allowed to publish his cartoons?

The world knows we are pissed and hurt, but all this is also hurting the economy, political ties, and cultural relationships of both sides.

P.S. What would Mohammad (PBUH) do?

P.P.S. What if your friend was Danish or Norwegian? Would you “boycott” them just because they were Danish or Norwegian?

U need to look into this a little deeper.

The reason no1 said anything for the last 5 months might be because we were giving them time to apologize for thier mistake. I DID hear of this previously (2 months ago).

The violence is uncalled for, but the boycotting is our way of attacking.
Im looking at this as a kinda test, asif this guy was intentionally doing it to show the world what the ‘Muzlimz’ reaction would be. And off course u could geuss it would be violent. I could be wrong, i probably am, but thats not the point.

The point is: As a muslim, when i heared what happened… i was outraged. And obligated to defend the prophet, but there are more ways of defense than just offence.

The Islamic religion cannot go to war with Denmark for whats happened. But we can make sure they wont forget thier mistake by harming thier economy.

I dont agree with the killing or all that shit. Bas the boycotting i agree with.

And the Irani thing is just funny :D. I like that :D.

P.S.S. If my friend was Danish, i wouldnt Boycott him, but ide let him know his country is made up of assholes :).

    ok.
its every Muslim’s right to be angry, of course, at this whole cartoon-of-the-prophet (PBUH) thing. first i was unphased by it, thinking: ok, people are generally stupid and most are ignorant, so its just another dumb human’s dumb action. but then i thought about it and realized yes, they’re making fun of our religion, our culture, our etc. etc. etc.
we could’ve retaliated and drew pictures of jesus christ on a dart board in our newspapers but we didn’t. we stayed calm for a few months, but now the bottles popped its cork and everyone wants to let their anger out (of course in a very very wrong way - what the hell is killing people gonna do?!)
BUTTTT imho, boycotting is SO not the answer. ok, there’ll be a tiny drop in the danish economy. and then? and then nothing. we’re hurting them and hurting ourselves by depriving ourselves from the goods that they’ve brought over to us. like for God’s sake - boycotting Lego?! are we REALLY that pathetic?! and KDD! most of the danish products are people’s staples for everyday life. you can’t just pull the rug on someone when they do something stupid.
the world is just dumb nowadays. there are a MILLION other ways to work this problem out WITHOUT bombing and shooting and boycotting, and this whole Irani holocaust cartoon thing is ridiculous. its like you pop my balloon, i sit on your birthday cake. we’re not kids..
these people are so-called managers and businessmen, politicians and presidents. why is it that we bloggers are more mature and rational than they are? doesn’t Islam promote peace and good-doing? where’s their stand and action for what their religion is all about?
i just want all the bullshit to stop. i miss my KDD :(

jaz, i respect ur opinion.. hehe.. i just want to say that before anything.. ;)
but if this was known a long time ago and we were just waiting for them to apologize then surely the apology that HAS been given would have stopped all this chaos.. u’re right we are hurt and offended but every single day we are hurt and offended.. why didnt all this happen when US soldiers at guantanamo tried to flush the koran down the freakin toilet? surely that so much MORE offensive.. and boycotting their products, to me, is just so silly and childish and we’re really actually hurting ourselves too.. i mean, they’ve even boycotted some medical products/supplies.. :|

p.s.s. saying that to ur friend wud make u seem like u think all danish peeps are like that cartoonist.. but i think u know otherwise.. im sure that in a few years everyone will say “what the hell were we thinking?!”

    ——————-

foofie, exactly.. :D we are angry, hurt, offended, etc. but we’re just making a reaaaally big deal about it.. we should be the ‘bigger man’ and try to peacefully deal with it, if not, just ignore it.. we dont need more hostility and bad publicity towards our great faith that promotes peace, love, and tolerance.. and i love ur little birthday party analogy.. explains it perfectly *thumbs up*

p.s. yeah dude! i just want my kdd passion fruit juice when i get home! :P

    Dear Snookie,

Thanks for the article and the link. Good work.

It is easy slip down this slippery path to insanity without thinking about our collective actions.

My little pearl of wisdom is that you can only diagnose clinical psychosis is when a person loses insight.. and cannot recognize that what he is doing is madness.

But more to the point… Why have all these riots occured now.. when infact these were publish in september 2005. Riots 6 months after publishing the cartoons… Odd don’t you think.

And don’t you find it odd that the countries whose embassies were attacked in Syria and Iran… (lebanon too.. but we know who caused that ;))

The same two countries who just recently are bieng discussed in the UN Security council… great way to divert attention… and make-up a crises of a different kind.

And then we have people (no disrespect) like Jaz… whose sympathies for his religion are hijacked for political causes.

Jazz it may interest you to know that “There are a number of depictions of Mohammed (PBUH), some in very unflattering situations, in Christian churches in Europe, especially Italy. The famous book/poem “Inferno” by Dante makes a very unflattering reference to Mohammed (PBUH) and there are several pieces of artwork depicting Dante’s descriptions.

There have been several derogatory or potentially inflammatory usages of Mohammed (PBUH) in American entertainment vehicles, perhaps the most famous being South Park. And last but not least, there is an actual sculpture of Mohammed (PBUH) on the Supreme Court building in Washington, DC.”

Perhaps we should boycott the world…

I think any we need a dose of sensible thinking. I am against what is printed.. and it did offend me personally. But we cannot force our values on another country. Maybe Britian should boycott Kuwait for still having the death penalty?

    truly,
    Misguided

  5. snookie Says:

Misguided, i second everything u said.. and the thing about syria and iran is interesting.. i never thought of it that way.. yeah its really weird that all these reactions are happening NOW and to DENMARK/NORWAY after all the other items u mentioned.. really weird :/

i hope this ends soon.. but i dont see things going back to the way they use to be..

  7. Ms Baker Says:

    Snookie-

First, sorry I haven’t been by yor blog for so long :)

What you wrote was a very accurate, insightful and mature analysis of a pathetically immature, out of control and hysterical situation. What is happening now is clearly meant to encourage hate and confrontation between the Western and Eastern civilizations and ways of thought which are different in so many ways, but have distinct ideological and peaceful bridges between them. Most of what’s happening is politically motivated obviously. But what is so troubling to me, is how destructive the ignorant inflamed emotions of Muslims/Arabs can be. They appear to have absolutely no control over their rationality and reactions as such. Hence, it now makes sense that terrorism would come from them in the eyes of the West. The cartoons were awful. They were repulsive. I was offended. But I loved your article because it reminded us of the spirit of what the Prophet (PBUH) really was: a man of peace and forgiveness in the face of ignorant insult, which could not touch or affect him. He was above it.

We should remember that, when we look at silly drawings drawn by irresponsible men whose own ignorance guided them.

    Thanks for posting this :)

    Ms Baker

and thank you, MsB, for inflating my ego :D

“They appear to have absolutely no control over their rationality and reactions as such. Hence, it now makes sense that terrorism would come from them in the eyes of the West.” that right there is THE golden thought..

and i agree, we should remember the Prophet’s (PBUH) example(s) and rise above all this.

  9. 3obad Says:

Despite the date (of your article), it provoked a comment.

Notice how in most countries where riots took place, there is no political venting.
It is a sad fact that mobs (like children) cannot accept expressions of counter-argument. I am a Muslim, so I’m not depicting this as an “Islamic” trait - it just isn’t. It’s crowd psychology. The neo-conservatives are doing it in American media, so did McCarthyists - this is only in contemporary and recent history. Crowds are like that.

Now, there are causes for Muslims’ continuous crowd behavior (in our societies). Just think of it - this is what I meant to say here.

The time it took you to question it in your mind. Evaluate whether it is rational (the Cartoons), what your response should be, what impact you hope to derive from such response and finally, whether you actually wish to respond - what’s it worth ?

None of the mobs arrived at your conclusion. They must be different!

The Pope’s statement, uninformed and highly charged as it was, did not elicit much response - nothing like the cartoons, but coming from such a political figure, I found it more volatile.

Let them say and draw what they will. It will certainly not take away any of Mohammad’s revelations (PBUH).

I didn’t mean to go on like this.. but your view was refreshing - I’m also not used to blogs.

  10. Johnny Banana Says:

I’m just a teeeeeeeeeeeny weeeeeny late on posting on this entry, but whatever….

I think misguided is a little misguided…but maybe i’m misguided into thinking misguided is misguided…so who is misguided…its quite misguiding…but misguided is….

Anyways….your these thoughts are the usual things I read in most newspapers and articles…no creativity, just regurgetate every opinion to make it seem your own and not even look at the bigger and more detailed picture of the situation going on in our world (And I think i realised why misguided is misguided, he’s been watchin too much CNN at that point)….I apologise for the critisism…and sadly i will not post my view because after reading this entry I know I will be attacked…all i can say is try and put 2 and 2 together…look at what caused it and the effect…i’m sure they are teaching you to be objective in Journalism? Anyways…apologies again…

  11. snookie Says:

im sorry.. i didnt know that every person in the world should have a unique and totally different opinion.. damn, now i have to change mine because someone else thinks just like me..

don’t accuse me of “regurgetating” opinions, you dont know me.

  12. Johnny Banana Says:

Listen, I’m sorry, but you are in journalism where they teach you to think for yourself and come to your own conclusions. Now if you did that and the conclusions you’ve reached sound like most of the books and articles I’ve read then I deeply apologise.

I never said anything about being unique either I dont know where you got that from, I just mentioned looking over an entire picture and being objective when commenting on something which to me you didnt do…I dont know you and obviously we know this, but I am reading what you wrote, thats you isnt it? That is a little of what I can base my comments on…just as you with me…

But I really don’t want to start an arguement because I enjoy the blog and I’m really sorry I commented…apologies lady…

  13. snookie Says:

u didnt say unique but u said that i have the same opinions of other news sources and other stuff.. which means u expect me to be different than them..

i dont have to prove to u that those are really my opinions.. and theres nothing wrong with me having the same views of others.. it doesnt mean that im not thinking for myself.. i actually choose to think that way because that is me..

and no, in journalism they dont teach us to think for ourself and come to our own conclusions (you dont need an education to be able to do that).. they teach us to report and provide the public with facts and unbiased information so that THEY can form an opinion by themselves..
