To Whom It Concerns..

it fell on her pancakes and stuck to her plate..
To whom it concerns, my ma made me write this,
and I’m just her kid, so how could I fight this..
To whom it concerns, I lost my assignment,
maybe I’ll get lucky, solitary confinement..
To whom it concerns, Darlene’s great with the ball,
but guys don’t watch tomboys when they’re cruising the hall..
To whom it concerns, I just turned thirteen,
too short to be quarterback, too plain to be queen..
To whom it concerns, I’m not made of steel,
when I get blindsided my pain is quite real..
I don’t mean to squawk, but it really burns..
I just thought I’d mention it, to whom it concerns..
– Darlene Conner, a character from the sitcom Roseanne
I don’t want to explain the poem because that would be annoying but I’d like to describe the character a bit so you could better appreciate it. Darlene is a 13-year-old middle child of a seemingly dysfunctional family (which really isn’t). She is a sporty tomboy with a fantastically sarcastic smartass attitude (she’s my favorite character after Roseanne). Basically, she’s a tough kid that has a soft inner core.
In this episode, her mom (Roseanne) forces Darlene to do her English homework: write a poem. Darlene scribbles something in 10 minutes which ends up being picked as one of the best poems written in her grade. Darlene isn’t so happy and doesn’t tell her mom that she was picked to read her poem out loud at her school’s Culture Night. Roseanne finds out somehow and again forces Darlene to go to Culture Night and be proud of her acheivement. But after first hearing it at Culture Night, Roseanne realizes that she shouldn’t have violated her daughter’s right of privacy.

Dear Snookie,
That’s a touching poem… and I feel you somehow identify with Darlene. I think there is a little Darlene within you… and it shines through in your writing and I love it… even though you wear socks all day and probably have smelly feet

Parents’ do seem to invade their children’s privacy quite a lot. Maybe we think since we gave birth to them we can own their lives

on my many sleepless nights I watch the Roseanne show at Nick at Night…I love the show.

hanan, its funny you say that because i personally think that once a couple have a child, their whole lives will forever revolve around the children.. everything they do, will have something to do with the children.. even if it isnt directly.. the location of a house they will buy, the type of car, their vacation locations, etc.. so right now, after years of really resenting the things my parents do to protect me, i actually appreciate it because i understand the purpose of their actions.. i will probablly even do the same things to my children, if i will have any..
jelly, i bought season 1 & 2 on dvd.. season 3 is coming out late march.. i unfortunatelly dont get Nick @ Nite..

I just watched the episode that poem is from for the first time a few minutes ago. Actually the show isn’t even over yet. That poem is really touching, I felt tears in my eyes. I felt so much that way when I was 13. I love Darlene she’s always been my favorite after roseanne as well.
