Bill Bennett

“I do know that it’s true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could — if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky.”
– Bill Bennett
How could someone even think of this ridiculous comment?! Bill Bennett, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education, said this while discussing lost revenue from the people who were aborted in the last 30 years. They also mention Freakonomics, a new book about “a rogue economist exploring the hidden side of everything.”
It is true that African Americans have a higher crime rate than White American, but what many don’t take into consideration is that there are more Whites than Afro-Americans! So ofcourse the percentage would be higher, but the actuall number is lower. I don’t care that he could be a racist (that’s his choice), or that he’s practicing his First Amendment right, but what’s annoying me and many others is his factual errors.
You can find a sound clip and the trasncript of this part of his conversation with the caller on his radio show, Bill Bennett’s Morning in America, here.

If you aborted every white baby, or spanish, baby, or any baby in any ethnicity, crime would go down. Everyone commits crimes. Some people should think before they talk. The statement was acurate, but put badly.

It’s an interesting approach.
First it’s shocking, it gets your attention.
Then it shows you that some solutions can’t be found in an extreme view.
But the biggest crime would consist in judging someone before his birth.
Crime is the price to pay when you mix democraty and capitalism. People should admitt that and wait wisely for a fair solution.
