City Night

City Night by Georgia O’Keefe is one of my favorite paintings done by the artist, although this one is not as popular as her famous sensual flowers. My favorite part of it is the tiny white dot on the left at the bottom of the painting. I feel that that dot right there in the middle of the dark and sitting underneath the towering shadows of the buildings has a personality and is a character by itself. When i first saw this painting in a book in my art class 3 years ago, all I could focus on was this dot and I got really excited! Hahah!
In her time, 1920s-40s, Georgia O’Keefe was greatly criticized and accused of being too erotic. None of her paintings displayed the traditional firgures/items that would be called erotic. There weren’t any nude bodys or any form of sexual act painted. These zoomed in on flowers however, appeared to ‘look’ like things that were unconventional and inappropriate.

Dear Snookie,
I am sorry.. but I just don’t see it. The dot is really not turning me on in anyway… I find it hard to believe that this is supposed to be erotic.
Sorry for the use of “turn on” .. arousal sounds even worse.. I just wanted to get my point across and have a limited vocabulary. Most boys do you know.

thats the beauty of art man.. not everyone is supposed to like it.. i mean, look at some Jackson Pollock stuff.. people thought he was insane at first..!! but then he gained an audience..
thats what makes art special to certain people.. sometimes u feel it and sometime u wont.. and thats how ur favorites are chosen
any particular artists u like??
im a fan of da vinci (because he was a thinker and not only a painter), frida kahlo, georgia okeefe, william blake, Dana ***** (a friend of mine), and Rayah ******* (another friend)

i just think the masculinity of this painting is what could make it “erotic” , the form of the tall dark structures (buildings) is perfectly complemntary to the masculine meaning/appearance

true, annonymous, that would explain the erotic theme of it.. I actually never considered the buildings in that way.. (shows how well i am at analyzing :/ lol) but to me, if those dots weren’t there then it wouldnt have had the same effect on me..

Dear Snookie,
