Sharbat Gula
I was browsing through one of my favorite websites, National Geographic Photography, when I wondered if I could find the famous photograph of the “afgan girl.”
I did, and there was also a short article that tells the story of her childhood and what her life as an adult is like now. You can also see photographs of what she looks like today.
Taken in 1984, this is undeniably the Mona Lisa of photography. Apart from Sharbat Gula’s natural dark beauty, the eyes (mashalla) are the most striking I have ever seen in my life. You can’t help but stare. In them I see horror, sadness, and grief.

For some reason i’m not able to look her in the eyes for more than 2 seconds at a time. Creepy!
Interesting story.

anakin, although that photograph also shows similar emotions, i have to say to me the one of the girl is the most photographically impactful.. the photo you have is a photo that gives you the womans feelings while the girl’s is just a portrait, where its the facial expression and the intensity of the eyes that give you her feelings.. well, thats my point of view..
but you still didnt tell me what you saw in the girl’s photo.. ;p

Right but as you’re talking about impact let me tell you more about the photo i told you to watch. That woman suffering have been interviewed few months after and seeing her preparing the meal and smiling and telling herself why she was in such a pain make me (us?) no more touched by that scene. So if you have news (good ones) from the green-eyed girl would you still feel the impact ??

but thats the beauty of photography! ur not supposed to be told (in writing or whatever) about the story or anything.. we have articles for that..
ps. i have a link in my post for those who want to read her story and her picture today (11 years later).. exactly like your photo.. hehe
