Strawberry Fields Forever

“Strawberry Fields Forever” is a song that came to John while he was filming a Dick Lester movie in 1966 called How I Won the War. He viewed it as a blues song. But the word Strawberry Field (without the ’s’) was in John’s life long before 1966.

When he was a growing up in Liverpool, he lived near an old Victorian building which was used as a childrens’ home. His aunt Mimi, who raised John, would take him there to the annual childrens’ festival. John became facinated with the gothic look of the building and the mysterious woods that lay beyond the garden of the home. He soon discovered that there was a shorcut from his own garden to Strawberry Feild and it became a place where he could be alone. Far from reality and free to roam his infamous imagination.

“Strawberry Fields Forever” symbolizes John’s need to be alone. To be apart from everything and everyone. Keep in mind that this was written in 1966; at the hight of The Beatles popularity. Above is a photograph of John behind the scenes in How I Won the War, where his character was called ‘Gripweed’. I picked an appropriate photograph to go with the story.

Strawberry Fields Forever (Lennon-McCartney)
Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.
It’s getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn’t matter much to me.
Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.
No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low.
That is you can’t you know tune in but it’s all right, that is I think it’s not too bad.
Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Always, no sometimes, think it’s me, but you know I know when it’s a dream.
I think I know I mean a ‘Yes’ but it’s all wrong, that is I think I disagree.
Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.

but if you’re asking about hthe physical strawberry field home for children, yes it still exists.. in liverpool, there’s a tour called the Magical History Tour (named after one of their albums, Magical Mystery Tour) that takes you to all the places in liverpool that the beatles have been or have been inspired by.. one of the places they pass by is a cemetary where lies the grave of a woman named Eleanor Rigby..
